Course Overview

Film & Literature is a course that will explore the connections between literature and film through an in-depth study of film, literature, writing, and film production from a literary perspective. Narrative devices common to both film and literature (e.g., plot, setting, characters, and theme) will be used as a basis to analyze examples of texts and movies. In addition the specific terminology of film (e.g., camera shots, angles, focus, transitions, lighting, sound, and mise en scene) will be studied. Students will consider the results of their analysis and consider how each specific medium controls content and the effect it has on its audience. Written work for this course will include films reviews, analyses of the dramatic, cinematic, narrative aspects of films, and comparisons of literary works and their cinematic adaptations.
